The place Stiklestad,Verdal in Trønderlag plays a special part in the history of Norway. In 1030 there was a important battle fought at Stiklestad between the banished Christian Norwegian king Olav II and a pagan army of mostly farmers, but backed by the Danish king. Olav lost the battle and was killed at Stikklestad. A church stands today at the place, and the altar in the church stands at the place Olav died. Behind the altar is the stone Olav rested his head on when he died. The coffin with Olav's body is today buried in Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim.
