Narvik is located on the shores of Ofotfjorden and insaide the Arctic Circle.The municipality ws established in 1902. Since then the city has been expanded by merger with neigboring municipaities.
Narvik was developed as an ice free port for the Swedish Kiruna and Gällivare iron mines. The Swedish mining ccrporation LKAB still use Narvik as shiping port for its iron ore.
